01.06.2024 Margate parkrun/parkwalk #518 – (2024)

As John finished his first timers and tourists briefing with, it's 'not always this cold, sometimes it's even colder!'. It certainly didn't feel like the 1st June though, so well done to the 181 finishers who braved Margate parkrun this week. As ever, my dad (Mr Happy) was trying to encourage the sunshine out with his attire.

Gina was celebrating her birthday this week and was visiting Margate from St Albans with Jane, Jacob and Gary. Mr Happy and I ran behind Jacob for a while and were amazed by his multi-tasking - bouncing a tennis ball whilst running. Incredibly it didn't blow away!

Also visiting this week were Medway runners Dave, Kath, Evie and Bertie.

We spent parkrun trying to catch up with the brilliant Edie, running with her dad Paul. They were visiting this week from Worcester parkrun which is a busy event through woodland. Edie has a bit of an ongoing competition with a gentleman in a Mr Slow top at her home parkrun so it was apt that Mr Happy and I were trying to catch her this week!

Terry, Beth and Pippin the dog were visiting last time I wrote a run report and were back again this week for more fun!

Among our four first timers to parkrun this week was Betty, pictured here with Ritchie, Izzy, Jacinta and Laura. Hope you enjoyed it Betty!

Jen Peters ran her 100th parkrun this morning - it was her second event at Margate. James Whittle was also visiting Margate this morning and was running his 250th parkrun. Congratulations to you both.

As usual we had many fantastic volunteers this week, including extra marshalls as we were using our alternative course again this week. We are very grateful to the volunteers who made this event happen: Holly Ansell, Dawn Bertram, Dennis Arthur Brandrick, Victoria Clark, Sharon Coughlan, Steve Darling, Frederick Donohoe, Ben Dunbar-Brunton, Joe Eddington, Allison Hales, John Hales, Anna Harrison, Richard Harrison, Peter Johnson, Reuben Knight, Sarah Ovenden, Doreen Parry, Matthew Perrin, Gaynor Shelvey, Paul Suttle, Steve Suttle, Ted Temple and John Wilcox.

Next Saturday TRAC (Thanet Roadrunners club) are very kindly taking over the volunteering roles for us but please do sign up to volunteer and be a hi vis hero another week! Here's John delivering his briefing in the beautiful June weather:

Just in case you need to know---------------------------------

Refreshments after– Palm Bay Cafe is still outside only and no access to a toilet, along with limitations on food and drink! Some go to Taddy's Barn Tea Room, 2 miles from our event (at Taddy’s garden centre, George Hill Road, Broadstairs CT10 3BN). There is seating in and outdoors. There are also many options in Margate, and you will find several of our regulars at Margate Coffee Shed. (Both do great cakes)!

Toilet facilities- Walpole Bay Hotel kindly let us use their toilets (but are closed November to March) so the next alternative is in the car park, at the top of Harold Rd, Cliftonville, Margate CT9 2HS (10 min walk).

Parking–Parking is free on the roads nearby, including Devonshire Gardens and Hodge’s gap with a few minutes walk to the start. Sometimes there is space on 5th Avenue, parking in the bowls centre may get you a fine.Pleaseavoid the car spaces outside the bus shelter/start of parkrun so we can use these forvolunteers who may need to go out on the course before or during the event.

Bicycles -please leave them to the sides of the shelter (in or outside) and avoid the seats under the parkrun sign as the scanners will be there!

Re milestones and celebrations

  • Do let the Run Director know if it is a birthday, milestone (25, 50, 100, 250, 500) or amazing number (some call arbitrary) for 150, 200, 300, 350, 400, 450, 550 plus! You motivate us and we like to cheer the achievement and we may not always know so please do say!
  • You can also borrow a banner from the box to wear or take a photo with our laminated cards (for milestones) - if you want!! Banners currently go up to 600!
  • You can always ask for a photo to be taken or send one in for our news report tomargate@parkrun.com

News report– if you ever want to write this or provide us some information for it, we'd love your input. Emailmargate@parkrun.com and John will put you on the rota! Don’t worry if Anna’s name is there, we are just happy to have someone do the report!

Results -occasionally you may find your result differ to what you expected. If it is more than seconds, please email margateparkrun.com to alert them and they will review the results.

Parkrun rule is no barcode, no result (and you come up as unknown) as it isn’t simple to add – however if your barcode doesn’t scan, the scanner will direct you to write the number on the sheet along with your finish token number and this can be added to the results.

For future, do remember we can:

  • Scan a photo of your barcode on your phone
  • Scan your barcode it if is on the 5k (purple) app – some can look it up for you if you can’t download this when there
  • If you haven’t registered you can try doing this whilst at parkrun.
  • Scan barcodes from wristbands that can be purchased from parkrun. It has your ICE number on, so great if out for a walk/run or race!
