Best Hostels in The Hague in 2024 | 8 AMAZING Places to Stay (2024)

In the western Netherlands, The Hague is a historic city on the shores of the North Sea. Its unique name can be traced back to the 15thcentury when it was derived from the name of a prominent hunting lodge. In the centuries since it has risen to international prominence as a city of peace and ironically political power.

Despite not being the national capital, the Netherlands’ government resides in The Hague, as it has done for over 400 years. It’s this history and culture mixed in with the nearby dunes and scenic coastline that makes The Hague such a fascinating traveling experience.

In the same day, you can take a peak at the International Criminal Court and the famous Peace Palace. All before exploring incredible museums, the city’s verdant parks, and the beach town of Scheveningen.

The BEST hostels in the Hague lie within walking distance of the city’s top highlights, while The Hague’s stellar public transit is ready to take you even further.

StayOkay – Hostel for Large Groups in The Hague

Best Hostels in The Hague in 2024 | 8 AMAZING Places to Stay (4)

Traveling in larger groups isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. Yes, you may be with some of your closest friends, or god forbid, work colleagues. But that doesn’t mean everyone’s wishlist and itinerary are going to match. That’s where The Hague’s own version of StayOkay comes in.

The popular hostel chain, seen in many parts of the Netherlands provides a wonderful mix of adventures beyond and within the hostel walls. The city is the largest coastal metropolis in the Netherlands and StayOkay places you right on the water’s edge while being only a 5-minute walk from the major Hollands Spoor Station and an easy bike ride to the beaches of Scheveningen.

In keeping with what the city offers, StayOkay provides all the beach vibes as you make your entrance for the first time. The colorful and bright interior evokes a cheerful and laid-back vibe.

This comes just in time for you to wander onto the exterior sun terrace with excellent waterfront views and impeccable vibes. Once the sun has set, head inside to mingle with fellow backpackers from across the globe at the resident restaurant at StayOkay bar.

With all this and more, your whole nomadic group can disperse across the city and the coast without pressure knowing that a charismatic, communal world awaits to bring you all back together.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

  • Waterfront Terrace
  • Ensuite Bathrooms
  • Pool Table

For all the social aspects and access to the best things to do in The Hague, the StayOkay amenities will help prep you for a memorable stay. The hostel has an abundance of ensuite bathrooms.

This means whether you settle for a 4, 8, or 9-bed dorm room (some of which are female-only!), you’ll have space just for your group to get themselves ready for an adventurous day or a big night on the town. Book ahead to secure an entire dorm for yourselves, but just remember to keep your messy bestie in check.

The bunk rooms are simple and effective. There’s decent space between each bed and boards run alongside the headrest to create a nice slice of privacy. You can also rest easy knowing there are ports to keep everything charged and reading lights if you’re just not ready to get some shuteye.

In the morning, you can enjoy an inexpensive breakfast among the elegant decor of StayOkay. All fueled up, grab some city maps and head for the waterfront where walking paths and bike lanes are ready to guide you through The Hague.

The Golden Stork – Most Affordable Hostel in The Hague

Best Hostels in The Hague in 2024 | 8 AMAZING Places to Stay (5)

On the precipice of a gorgeous canal, the Golden Stork is one of the best hostels in The Hague for budget backpackers. The relatively small hostel is just a stone’s throw from the major attractions, but you wouldn’t know it from its secluded position.

There’s an intimate atmosphere at the Golden Stork. Away from the major streets and thoroughfares, it goes about its lies without a ton of fanfare, simply enjoying its quiet place in the world.

Looking over the canal is the sun-soaked patio and beautiful greenery where you can enjoy a drink from the hostel bar or your go-to morning beverage, with beans from The Hague’s own Roast Factory Coffee. Where the Golden Stork lacks in communal spaces, it makes up for this spot. Start your day here, watching the city wake up and smoothing out any kinks in the day’s schedule.

After a marvelous day of exploration trade your coffee for a pint of Kompaan and Eiber craft beers and take a peak at the restored facade that tells some stories of a bygone era, all the while reminiscing on the travels so far.

Soon you’ll hear your first major noises from this calm alcove. These sounds mark the beginning of nightlife events and soon the frustrated sighs of a losing hand of Monopoly or live music tunes.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

  • Pods
  • Bike Hire
  • Great Food & Drink

The Golden Stork is a simple hostel that helps you tighten those purse strings while focusing purely on what it does well. It may lack some elegance and be rough around the edges, but most hostels are like that. Instead, what it provides is a down-to-earth escape from the center of the Hague, simple dorms, and even private, personal pods.

It may lack some of the flashes and decor of some of our other favorite hostels in the Hague, but it doesn’t miss out on what’s most important. Guests will still have fresh, cozy linens, reading lights, charge points, and individual luggage space.

Bikes are also available to hire so you can move beyond the serene backstreets, through Chinatown, and into the major city squares major bars, event venues, and attractions.

However, you won’t start your day’s adventure on an empty stomach. We mentioned the coffee and craft brews but this Den Haag haven has its own vegetarian cafe and some of the most delicious homemade cakes known to man.

Pink Flamingo – Great Dorm for Couples in The Hague

Best Hostels in The Hague in 2024 | 8 AMAZING Places to Stay (7)

Are you traveling to the Hague with your significant other? The Pink Flamingo offers a splash of high-end travel with hostel prices. Across two buildings, this hostel is perfect for those seeking a little bit of comfort, plenty of privacy, and when it’s all said and done; that same intrinsic, social experience that only the best hostels in Europe can provide.

The boutique hostel has an air of elegance and Insta-worthiness. As you enter The Pink Flamingo the plant life, both real and painted across the walls, welcomes you into a serene, natural space. Once you’re done reaching for your phone you’ll get checked in and whisked away to your chosen room.

On arrival, you’ll discover something that honestly not all hostels are great at cleanliness. The dorms are modern, awash with white and not an off-white that’s hiding a summer of untold deeds. There’s plenty of natural light and exposed beams. The private rooms with ensuite bathrooms, enormous windows, and city views are straight out of a modern hotel experience, where all that’s missing is a bathrobe, a couple of slices of cucumber, and a spa hour. So, boys, you can’t whiff with this pick.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

  • Rooftop Terrace
  • Yoga Classes
  • Effortless Elegance

For all its beauty and elevated atmosphere, The Pink Flamingo is one of the best hostels in the Hague because it still nails the hostel experience. For backpackers, broke or otherwise, it’s not lost on the owners that their guests are venturing through the Netherlands and beyond.

The colors and effortless elegance make their way to the communal areas where there are expansive seating areas and an abundance of charging ports. So no, you won’t have to dip, duck, dodge, and dive to get your gear charged.

Within the space are the self-catering facilities so you can whip up your go-to dish away from home and remind your S.O. that underneath that crusty backpacking exterior you’re still you.

Continue on to find lounges with board games, TVs, and Netflix, for those chill nights in, plus the sunny outdoor terrace. Here, you’ll find bohemian floating chairs with little pillows and blankets. The terrace also comes into its own as a yoga space for the early birds among us.

When it’s time to explore the Hague, there lies a tram stop right outside of the Pink Flamingo. The hostel itself is in the center of the center on the main Grote Markstraat thoroughfare and among The city’s best nightlife.

Other Budget Accommodation in The Hague

There are more than just hostels in the Hague for travelers seeking budget accommodation. You can expand your research and explore other unique places to stay like guesthouses, homestays, or maybe couchsurf. Here are some of my favorite places to stay in and around the Hague.

Hague Teleport Hotel

Best Hostels in The Hague in 2024 | 8 AMAZING Places to Stay (9)

One of the best alternative options to the best hostels in the Hague is this hotel with an abundance of alternative energy. The Hague Teleport Hotel is located in the Blinckhorst, known to be the city’s trendy street art district. Here, you’ll find all the trendy and artsy vibes in a budget-friendly space. One that has a similar attitude as your classic hostel.

Yes, you’ll have access to queen beds, studios, and twins. However, this hotel comes with 4-person maisonettes, 5-person studios, and even dormitory rooms. This allows Teleport to be a great option for groups of travelers seeking to enjoy their own space without having to rub shoulders with strangers and listen to someone snore at 2 am.

The dorms are hotel quality and some rooms even offer a kitchenette. In the downstairs lobby area, there is ample room to socialize and shoot some pool before enjoying a meal at the hotel restaurant.

Room for Three

Best Hostels in The Hague in 2024 | 8 AMAZING Places to Stay (10)

If you’re seeking a break entirely from the hostel atmosphere, then you should take a peak at this Airbnb in the Netherlands. It’s got all the things backpackers require to keep their lives comfortable and moving while on the road. And get this, it’s just as cheap as some of my favorite Hague hostels.

This inexpensive double room can sleep up to three travelers and is located in a great spot. Guests will find themselves just a few blocks back from the beachfront and the dunes of Westduin Park. Happy walkers can even stroll into The Hague Center or make use of public transport for a cruisy ride to major attractions.

Although you do miss out on the hostel atmosphere, the home’s amenities make up for it. Here, travelers can finally make the most of having their own kitchen and not have to wake to find their creations have disappeared from the communal fridge.

Staten Hotel

Best Hostels in The Hague in 2024 | 8 AMAZING Places to Stay (11)

Staten Hotel is another great budget option in The Hague. Travelers can come and enjoy a cozy, family-run hotel that offers fantastic value for money. It all starts in the morning with Staten Hotel’s complimentary breakfast buffet that has all the fixings and will fuel you up for a big day outside.

With coffee coursing through your veins, you’ll be a quick jaunt to the beach where the dunes await and on sunny days, maybe even a refreshing dip in the ocean.

On the walk, you’ll notice the serenity of the Ferd neighborhood that lies just on the outskirts of the city center, with a handful of antique shops and old-time bookstores. As for making your way downtown, public transport can take you there in around 20 minutes.

After a day out and about, come and enjoy some late afternoon sunshine on the deck. The relaxed ambiance of the hotel is great for cracking open a book while having your own private room is an excellent chance to enjoy some of the best shuteye on your travels.

En Suite

Best Hostels in The Hague in 2024 | 8 AMAZING Places to Stay (12)

The last accommodation in our exploration of the best hotels and hostels in the Hague is En Suite. Closer to downtown than the previous two options, En Suite is a more upscale hotel that would be great for traveling couples not looking to break their budget.

En Suite is an exceedingly homely place, it’s a sensation you’ll receive as you marvel at the gorgeous facade before entering. It’s then that you’ll meet the wonderful staff that will aid you in enjoying the laid-back neighborhood, the oceanside, and the nearby city center.

The rooms are no frills but quite easy on the eyes, thanks to the decor that’ll have you feeling right at home. After a great sleep, you can make the most of the complimentary breakfast before exploring the many nearby museums, the Sportpark De Verademing, and the neighboring canal.

What To Pack For Your The Hague Hostel

Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.
