The Surgical Technologist Intern is an allied health professional who works with surgeons and other health care practitioners providing a supportive role in the surgical care to patients in a variety of settings. The surgical technologist intern, under direct supervision of a surgical technologist, handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate based on the level of patient contact this position requires.

ResponsibilitiesThe Surgical Technician Intern responsibilities, under direct supervision by a Surgical Technician include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Maintains the sterile field.
• Communicates with supervising technician to gain understanding of the procedure in order to anticipate the needs of the provider.
• Reviews necessary steps with supervising technician to ensure quality patient care and takes responsibility for ensuring patient safety during the operative procedure.
• Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure
• Scrubs, gowns, and gloves
• Assists in setting up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and solutions needed for procedure
• Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants
• Helps in draping sterile field
• Passes instruments, sharps, etc., to surgeon during procedure
• Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure
• Prepares sterile dressings
• Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization
• Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of room
• Assists in prepping room for the next patient

Reports to the assigned Clinical Supervisor and Clinical Manager.

Qualifications

• BCLS within 120 days of employment
• Must be able to communicate effectively in English
• Six months patient care experience, EMS/Paramedic experience OR current enrollment in a Surgical Technician training program.
