IRRIGATED LAND
FOR SALE
In August 1907. W. P. Stites. Ed Pullion W. E.
Nickerson and Ed C. Dustin Sec'y Texas Onion
Growers' Association rented of W. S. Dougherty
107 acres of land for an onion crop at $20 per acre
adjoining La Lomita ranch. During September
October and November they plowed and prepared
their land and planted their seed beds. During De-
cember they transplanted their onions to the field.
May 4th 1908 87 cars of onions were shipped av-
eraging 500 or more crates per car and selling at
$1 and better per crate. It is safe to estimate the
returns-irom these 107 acres of onions to be not
less than $43500 for a crop which it took less than
9" months to produce and sell. The above parties
have sir ce bought land from La Lomita ranch. Affi-
davits substantiating this statement will be gladly
furnished by Conway & Hoit of La Lomita ranch.

This train made a record run from
here to Bay City starting from this !
station at two o'clock in the morn-;
ing and reaching Bay City in just i
fourteen hours
A considerable part of theisms
train was added at Harlingen 1
where the truckjfrom points on the
branch Hue in Hidalgo county was j
waiting. Other cars were taken
from various points as far north
as iUugsvilIe until the total
reached 27 cars. The shipments
comprised chiefly onions cucum-
bers cabbage and celery.
The results of the present truck
season have ' been very gratifying
Lto the road which according to
figures given out by the traffic de-
partment handled 312 cars of
truck during the month of April.
Of these shipments about ninety
cars went from Brownsville and
the others from points all along
the line including Blalack Spur.
Olmito Francisco Harlingen (in-
cluding a considerable number
from points on the branch line in
Hidalgo county) and other points
as far up as Kingsville.
The road is making'a specialty
of handling the truck from this
region running a daily truck
spechl train through from Browns-
ville. Most of the truck at present
however is coming from points
higher up the line as the larger
part of the truck from this im-
mediate vicinity was shipped early
in the season.
Considering the fact that this
is an entirely new territory and
when the railroad was first operat-
ed five years ago there was no
produce whatever to ship out of
here it can readily be seen what a
transformation has been made in
this region by the coming of the
greatest of all developing agencies
the railroad.

WILL SCREEN MARKET.
' As oon as the city can secure
a little money for that purpose the
market house will be white-washed
and thoroughly over hauled"
said Mayor Combe this morning.
"Arrangements will also be made
as boon as possible to have all the
meat-dealers in the market house
place screens around their booths
so as to protect the meats from the
flies andlother insects" he continu-
ed "it is the plan to have the screens
so arranged that they may be
closed at all times except when the
dealer is leaving or entering the
booth which can be done by means
of a swinging door. This matter
will be attended to at the earliest
practicable moment.
It would not be practicable to
enclose the entire ground floor of
the market house with screens as
people would be entering and leav-
ing the enclosure so constantly
that little good would be accom-
plished by that means. We be-
lieve however that the plan to
have the individual dealers enclose
their booths with screens will have
the desired results."
Since the letter of Traffic Mana
ger William jjonerty or the at.
Brownsville and Mexico
railroad in regard to the scalping
of tickets in Brownsville and the I
charge that it was being done by !
the most prominent residents of the
city considerable agitation has'
been felt among the citizens.
The mayor Dr. Frederick J.
Combe advised'Charles M. Barnes
secretary of the Iower Rio
Grande Commercial Club who re-
ceived the letter to secure from
Geo. T. Porter general agent of
the company at this city ' the
names of the citizens referred to by
him in the charges which Mr.
Doherty asserts that Mr. Porter
made and have them announced
at a meeting of the citizens of
Brownsville.
The original communication re-
ceived here was to Mr. Barnes
from Mr. Dohety in which the
latter said that Mr. Porter had
complained repeatedly fifteen or
twenty times in fact that tickets
were being scalped by leading citi-
zens of Brownsville. Mr. Doherty
wrote that he attached a copy of
Mr. Porter's letter but this was
not in the envelope received by
Mr. Barnes.
Mr. Porter refused to disclose
the names of the citizens referred
to and said that the matter rested j
between the secretary of the Com- j
mercial club and Mr. Doherty but i
inasmuch as the names of the par- i
ties charged with the scalping werei
not given to the club Air. Barnes
stated that there was not suf-'
ficient information on which toj
base a line of action looking to the I
prevention of scalping in the fu- j
ture.
Accordingly he has written to
Mr. Doherty acquainting him with
the plan advised by Mayor Combe
and asking that specific charges
against the alleged ticket scalpers
be made. He is now awaiting a
reply containing the names of the
prominent citizens against whom
the charges have been made.
When they are received a meet-
ing of citizens will be called and
the names placed before them. Ac-
tion will then probably be taken
on plans to discontinue the nui-
sance. General Manager Miller and
Traffic Manager Doherty were here
last night having arrived after six
o'clock but they left this morning
very early and Mr. Barnes did
not get to see them. It is expect-
ed however that they will return
here this evening and he will en-
deavor to see them and obtain
some more definite information
concerning the charges against our
people ill this matter.
