Fast charging technologies are becoming increasingly common, and Quick Charge isone of the most frequently used. Qualcomm® Quick Charge technology powers your devicesfaster than conventional charging, allowing you to spend less time connected to outlets.Learn how it works and how to keep your devices safe when fast charging.

Another popular form of fast charging is USB-PD, you can learn more about USB-PD, here.

WHY QUICK CHARGE

THE BENEFITS OF QUICK CHARGE

When paired with compatible devices, a Quick Charge-enabled charger delivers more power, allowing theconnected device to charge faster. As one of the most widely used of the fast charging technologies,Quick Charge is already in many of your favorite smartphones. If your smartphone is Quick Charge3.0-compatible, you can charge up to 80% in just 35 minutes.*

To futureproof your chargers, each new Quick Charge generation is backwards compatible, meaning itwill work with the generations that came before. In addition, Quick Charge 4+ is expected to workwith USB Power Delivery, enablingQuick Charge accessories to fast charge a wider array of devices.

THE EVOLUTION OF QUICK CHARGE

While smartphone designs have evolved to utilize higher capacity batteries alongside larger screens,USB charging was limited to 5V and 1.5A (7.5W). Quick Charge 2.0 was introduced in 2014 to overcomethis limitation by enabling supported devices to accept a higher charge level when paired with aQuick Charge compatible charger. Quick Charge has continued to evolve, making the charging processeven faster and more efficient, while ensuring a safe charge that protects battery life.

Quick Charge 3.0 was introduced in 2015 to sustain high power delivery for charging while also makingsure that power transfer was as efficient as possible. The latest evolutions, Quick Charge 4 and 4+will be universal, allowing them to work with any fast charging-enabled device.

IS YOUR DEVICE QUICK CHARGE-ENABLED?

To ensure you are getting the most optimized charging experience possible, make sure yourdevice and charger are both Quick Charge compatible. You can also check here if your accessory isQualcomm Certified.

WHY QUICK CHARGE CERTIFICATION MATTERS

Always look for the Quick Charge logo when buying an accessory for your Quick Charge-compatibledevice. This certification ensures that the charger meets Qualcomm’s standards for performanceand safety. With a charger that’s not Quick Charge certified, there’s increased risk ofshorting or overheating, which can damage both your device and charger.

Your charger may get warm while powering devices, but if it’s certified Quick Chargecompatible, there’s nothing to worry about. These certifications mean a series of safetymeasures have been taken. A controller chip regulates the flow of electricity to your battery, ensuring there aren’t any dangerous spikes in the current while temperature and voltagecontrols keep your charger running within safe parameters.

Cheat Sheet

Qualcomm Quick Charge

Quick Charge 2.0 and Quick Charge 3.0 are widely used fast charging technologies created byQualcomm. Found in popular devices, such as Samsung Galaxy smartphones, they have beendesigned with advanced safety features that keep your charger and connected devices safefrom overheating and short circuiting.

USB-PD

Another popular fast charging technology is USB-PD. You can learn more about USB-PD, here.

Fast Charging for iPhone

A fast charging technology designed by Apple to power iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 8 upto 50% in 30 minutes when using a Lightning cable with an Apple 29W, 61W or 87W USB-C PowerAdapter or comparable third-party USB-C power adapter that supports USB Power Delivery(USB-PD). Apple Fast Charge protects the charger and iPhone from risks like overheating andpower spikes.

mAh

mAh stands for Milliamp Hours and quantifies the energy storage capacity. It is based on howlong a battery will last when power is drawn constantly, e.g. a 2000 mAh battery will powera device drawing 100 mAh for 20 hours

Volts

Short for voltage, volts indicates the pressure at which information is sent. When there ishigh voltage, a smaller wire can be used, allowing for more compact devices and accessories.

Amps

Short for ampere is a unit of current. If the amps are a hose, then voltage is the pressureat which water passes through the hose. The more amps, the less voltage is needed totransfer data.

Watts

Watts are a measure of electrical power.

Charge Controller

Charge controller, also called charge regulator or battery regulator prevents overchargingand can protect against overvoltage that reduces battery performance and lifespan.

Optimal Charging

The fastest possible charging for the connected device is optimal charging.
